چکیده

There is growing evidence for the existence of radioadaptive response. Furthermore, some investigators have reported entirely negative results in individuals with chromosome instabilities as well as healthy persons. In our studies we found a young healthy donor who showed no adaptive response in all of our experiments. In addition, he showed a severe hypersensitivity to subsequent irradiation after a common adapting dose (synergistic effect). To assess whether the induction of such a synergistic response and lack of radioadaptive response is a temporary situation or not, we evaluated the frequency of radiation-induced chromosome aberrations during a 6 month follow up. Peripheral blood lymphocytes of this donor were exposed to an adapting dose of 5 or 10 cGy X-rays followed by a challenge dose of 2 or 3 Gy X-rays with different radiation qualities. This donor showed no adaptive response in all of the experiments. Furthermore, considering the induction of a severe synergistic effect in some experiments, it may be concluded that the induction of such a severe response is a temporary situation. Despite the fact that we do not know the frequency of such individuals in the population who show such an extraordinary synergistic effect, it may be concluded that possible implications of radioadaptive response in the

Variablity of chromosomal radioadaptive response in human lymphocytes.

Background : There are growing evidences for chromosomal radioadaptive response in human lymphocytes . Highly variable inter- and intra-individual responses have been reported. Some individuals are non-responders and even in some donors the frequency of chromatid aberrations induced by a challenge dose increases by pre-exposure to an adapting dose. It has been proposed that the lack of radioada...

How public fear from radiation in nuclear medicine can be reduced? [Persian]

Today, nuclear medicine has rapidly been developed so that in some cases, plays a unique role in diagnosis but unfortunalty in spite of diagnostic and therapeutic advantages, the term “NUCLEAR” can induce worries in patients and society. In this article, base on new documents, we intend to show that this worries has no scientific basis. To produce a realistic view, ...

Non-linear phenomena in biological findings of the residents of high background radiation areas of Ramsar

Some Areas of Ramsar, a city in northern Iran are among the world’s wellknown inhabited areas with highest levels of natural radiation. Annual exposure levels in these areas are up to 260 mGy y‐1 and the mean exposure rate is about 10 mGy y‐1 for a population of about 2000 residents. If elevated levels of natural radiation as high as a few hundred mSv per year is detrimental to health and...

Radiation hormesis and adoptive response induced by low doses of limiting radiation

Ionizing radiation has long been known to produce detrimental biological effects. Although these harmful effects are the results of high doses of exposure, some other maladies such as mutation and cancer seems  to be induced at low doses of exposure. In recent decades, however, some pioneer scientists have indicated that ionizing radiation like many other essential agents has toxic effects  ...

Can previous thyroid scan induce cytogenetic radioadaptive response in patients treated by radioiodine for hyperthyroidism?

Background: Induction of radioadaptive responses in cells pretreated with a low dose radiation before exposure to a high dose is well documented by many investigators. The aim of this study is to determine the frequency of chromosomal aberration in peripheral blood lymphocytes of patients treated by radioiodine (131I) for hyperthyroidism, with or without previous thyroid scan with 99mTc. Materi...
